School not only teaches academics, it also provides children with an opportunity to socialize with their peers. By attending regular school, children make friends and learn how to handle social situations. Homeschooling your children does not allow for regular socialization. As such, you children may become socially inept.
A great deal of time is required for homeschooling not only for the actual teaching aspect but for the planning, grading and collecting of resources. According to Family Education, if you choose to homeschool your children, you may find that you have little time for anything else as much of your time is devoted to providing a quality education. Being a homeschool parent is a job in and of itself--if you have a job outside of this, you will surly find that these two jobs are the only things that you have time for.
It can be difficult to find the resources to provide your children with a quality education at home. Many school districts offer support for families that homeschool--that is, they provide materials and a curriculum to follow. If your district or community does not offer support for your homeschooling venture, you may have a hard time finding the resources you need to adequately educate your children.
Homeschooling your children means that you will be with them on a constant basis. While you love your children and enjoy spending time with them, this constant exposure may cause you--and your children--to grow weary of each other. Undoubtedly, there are things that you enjoy doing while your children are not around. Additionally, children need to learn a sense of independence, which may be difficult for them to achieve if they are in constant contact with their parents.
When you homeschool, your children are only experiencing your educational and worldly views. They are not exposed to different teaching styles and points of view, which allow them to formulate their own ideas and opinions about the world.
Many members of society have a negative view of homeschooling, for one reason or another. Some individuals may think that you deem yourself better than them and the rest of society if you homeschool. Others may just regard it not the best situation for children. Whatever the reasoning, this negative stigma may cause you to be the center of a lot of scrutiny. Expect to be questioned about your beliefs and be prepared to defend yourself if you do choose to homeschool.
