Teaching Children Time With a Standard Clock

Standard, or analog, time is a relatively simple concept to teach children, as long as they are familiar with counting and numbers. The important element is allowing children to practice. Using fun and interactive activities will allow children to become familiar with the times of day, as well as the long and short hands.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a paper plate to create a standard clock face, adding the numbers 1 through 12 with a marker.

    • 2

Cut two thin strips of construction paper, one shorter than the other, and tack them to the center of the paper plate. These two strips will be the minute and hour hands.

    • 3

Talk with the children about the basics of time: the hour and the minute. Point to each hand of the clock during the explanation.

    • 4

Quarter the standard clock by pointing out the four orienting times: 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00. Practice using these times as a reference by having the children point to their 12:00 (in front), their 3:00 and 9:00 (to the right and to the left, respectively) and to their 6:00 (behind them).

    • 5

Gradually add other whole-hour times, then move to half hours and quarter hours.
