If your child is seven years or older, you must notify the Education Service District (ESD) in your county if you intend to home school your child. This is called a letter of intent. The letter must include the parent's name, child's name, child's address, child's birth date and the name of the local school district or name of the last school your child attended. The ESD may release your child's information to military recruiters. If you do not want your child's information released, note this in your letter of intent.
Children must be schooled between the ages of seven and 18, or until a child completes the 12th grade. You may begin home schooling your child before he turns seven, but are not required to do so by law.
When your child completes grades three, five, eight and 10, he must complete a state-mandated exam to test his academic knowledge. You may select a state-certified tester to administer the exam to your child. You must pay any fees associated with the exam to cover testing materials and the tester's time. Academic achievement tests may be administered in a group setting or in your home.
The state of Oregon does not regulate home school instructors. Anyone may home school their child, regardless of academic background or teaching experience.
