How to Design Floral Bedding for Teens

Decorating bedrooms for teens can be a difficult task. Teens often want to show a more adult face through a change in furniture, wall hangings and color choice. However, they don't want their rooms to look "old" or too adult. One way to ensure your teen girl gets exactly what she wants is to help her design her own bedding. Floral designs are feminine and can be modified to feel grown up, while allowing your teen to indulge in her favorite bright colors. While some stores allow you to design custom bedding online, you can also make your own bedding at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread your white bedding items out on a flat, clean surface. Place your floral stencils on the bedding and arrange and rearrange them until you find a design you like. Try a repeating floral design with smaller flowers on the sheets and pillow cases and a larger central design surrounded by smaller flowers on the comforter.

    • 2

Tape your flowers to the bedding with painters tape once you've decided on a design. Trace the stencils with chalk. Achieve a repeating design by moving a single stencil over your bedding or use a border stencil. Pick simple, easy to draw designs.

    • 3

Choose a color pattern, noting which of your dye colors would mix well to create new colors. For instance, you could have blue flowers surrounded by a purple background or yellow flowers surrounded by an orange background.

    • 4

Melt some chunks of beeswax in a candle warmer and brush the wax carefully over your flower patterns. Mix your dye in plastic tubs according to package directions, substituting about half the water for vinegar to create more brilliant colors. Soak your bedding with warm water and slip it into the plastic tubs and let it soak for about two hours.

    • 5

Remove the bedding from its dye bath and let it air dry. Place paper towels over the wax, turn your iron on low, and rub it over the paper towels to remove the wax from your flowers. Mix your second dye color (the color you want your flowers to be) and dye it as before. Let the bedding air dry and iron it on medium to set the colors.
