Teach your child about pets in the home. Dog and cat bites are among the greatest threats to children under 4 years old. Educate them not to pull the pet's tail or ears, as this can agitate and cause it to attack. Make sure they don't bother the pets while the pets are eating or sleeping. Teach them to never play with animals they aren't familiar with outside the home, as well. Ensure that the pet is child-friendly before bringing it around your children.
Do not allow your child to consume beverages around TVs, DVD players and other electrical items. Spilled drinks on electrical appliances can cause fires or even electrocute your child. Warn the child whenever you see him breaking this rule. Punish them if they continue to ignore your ruling. As the child gets older and is able to use appliances on his own, teach him to unplug them after use.
Tell your children to stay far away from lit candles, fireplaces and other devices in the home that use fire. Keep additional flammable items such as matches and lighters from her reach. Teach her that while fire may look enticing, it is extremely dangerous and not something to play with. Monitor your child at all times whenever she is in a room with an item that uses fire. Teach her what to do in case of a fire and evacuation from the home. These tactics include covering her mouth with a moist towel to protect against fumes while escaping, and stopping, dropping and rolling in the extreme case her clothes catch fire. Have your child join a fire safety program at your local fire station as well.
