Instructions for Salt Volcano Science Projects

If you are putting together a science project about volcanoes, you may think that you need to construct an exploding mound of dough and clay. However, this type of volcano project is highly overused, and will not seem original in a science fair. One alternative is to make a salt volcano, which displays how a volcano functions without using the standard materials you would use in a clay or dough volcano.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 3 to 4 inches of water into a large glass jar.

    • 2

Combine 1/3 cup vegetable oil with 5 drops of food coloring in a cup. Mix well with a spoon.

    • 3

Cover the water with the colored vegetable oil.

    • 4

Shake salt over the top of the colored vegetable oil. The salt crystals will combine with the colored oil, causing the oil to sink down to the bottle of the jar. Once at the bottom of the jar, the colored oil will separate from the salt, causing it to "erupt" towards the surface of the water again.
