Simple Physical Science Projects

Physical science is the study of natural science and nonliving things. Areas such as chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy and food properties are all part of physical science. Many simple projects can be done to illustrate different components of physical science.
  1. Mold Growth

    • Mold growth can be used for a simple physical science project. You will need slices of bread, an eye dropper, sandwich bags and a piece of paper to monitor results. Bread slices should be placed on a clean surface; each piece of bread gets a different amount of water dripped onto it. Bag the bread slices and seal the bag. Monitor the slices over the next week to see which bread slices grew mold the fastest.

    Tempering Chocolate

    • Chocolate is a sweet and rich candy treat. When covering items in chocolate you have to temper it. Tempering is the process where chocolate's cocoa butter is hardened to a specific crystalline pattern. This will prevent white powdering on the exterior of the chocolate. Investigate the different temperatures and how they affect the chocolate. Brush chocolate at different temperatures on wax paper and monitor the color, how it dries, if it hardens and how shiny it is.

    Static Electricity

    • If you have pulled a blanket out of the dryer without a dryer sheet you have probably felt a little static electricity in the hairs of your arms. Scuffing your feet across carpet and touching a light switch can create a shock of static electricity as well. With a light bulb, balloon and dark light you can create your own static electricity experiment. Rub the balloon on your head to create static. Touch the balloon to the light bulb and you should see small sparks in the dark room from the static electricity.

    Growing Crystals

    • Growing your own crystals can be an after-school activity for children with limited supervision. For this experiment you will need a pie pan, sponges cut into shapes, Epsom salt, water, measuring cups, a mixing bowl and food coloring. Pour an Epsom salt mixture over the sponges and dry them for several days in a sunny location to form crystals. Monitor the results.
