How to Write a Superior Persuasive Essay

A persuasive essay must convince the reader to agree with your point of view or accept your decision. Write an outline first of three to five of your strongest arguments. Consider the pros and cons of each argument, then take the strongest three and form your essay around them. If you have too many points in your paper, the reader will get lost and bored. A tighter number of arguments also forces you to study and emphasize the strengths of each point.

Research each argument or idea for extra information. If all you can say is "this is what I believe," it is not going to persuade a reader. Each argument must be backed up by facts, figures and if possible, quotes from experts. Find the same kind of evidence to support the opposing point of view. The paper is only worthwhile if you can logically refute the other side's facts.

    • 2

Write an introduction that tells the reader why she should care about this subject. The reader needs to be pulled in immediately to this concern. Some of your facts or figures, or an analogy can work in the intro.

    • 3

Put each argument in its own paragraph. Your strongest points should be the first and last since most readers will best remember the first and last things they encounter. The last point could include some of the counter arguments and why you think they're wrong. It will only enhance the credibility of the essay to show you are aware of, and respectful of other opinions.

    • 4

Conclude the essay with a brief graph that summarizes your view and everything you want the reader to remember.
