This is a group activity. Have each member of your group write down on index cards one object, one setting, and one line a character might say. Fold the index cards and put in three hats: one for objects, one for settings, and one for lines. Shake the hats up and have each member pick out one index card from each hat. Set the timer: Everyone has 10 minutes to compose a scene using all three elements.
Write a two-person scene. The scene must begin at one extreme and end at the other. Your options are: love to hate, rage to joy, betrayal to trust, and seduction to repulsion (these can also be done in reverse). Take 10 minutes to write the scene.
This is a group activity. Each group member will briefly describe a historical event on an index card (no more than 20 words). Fold the index cards and put them in a hat. Shake them up and have each member blindly select an index card. Take 20 minutes to rewrite the historical narrative.
This is a group activity. Have each group member bring in a treasured photo or painting. Sit in a circle and pass the pictures to the right. Take 10 minutes to describe what is going on in the picture, including the characters, what they want, what secrets they keep from each other and where they were five minutes before this picture was taken. Once the first 10 minutes are up, take another 10 minutes to write a scene starting at the moment the picture was taken; what happens now? Don't think about it, just write.
