How to Write a Strong Personal Statement for Law School

The personal statement is a document submitted by law school applicants along with other forms such as undergraduate transcripts and standardized test scores. Its purpose is to supply admissions-committee members with a personal perspective unique to each applicant--a tool that provides information about prospective students that cannot be quantified by grades and tests. Some liken the personal statement to an interview, as most law schools do not conduct interviews during their admissions processes.

Instructions

    • 1

Refer to the requirements for the respective law schools to which you will apply. Check for content requirements and tips offered for strong personal statements.

    • 2

Choose a topic. Common choices refer to obstacles overcome, lessons learned, reasons for wanting to attend law school, organizational and leadership experience and inspiring experiences.

    • 3

Organize your thoughts in pre-writing. Make notes on content, attempting to tie in personal examples, notable achievements and information that makes your application unique.

    • 4

Compose a first draft that integrates a personal authorial tone, specific examples from your life, small details that the reader might find informative or interesting and your reason for applying to law school. Consider the audience. Anticipate and answer questions that readers might want to ask.

    • 5

Submit your draft for revision to either a respected peer, a colleague or a professional revision service.

    • 6

Revise the draft using input from multiple sources. Allow time to reflect on different opinions and potential changes before submitting.
