How to Write a Bibliography Card for a Website

When you are conducting research or writing a paper, bibliography cards are a critical step in organizing research sources and information. Bibliography cards allow you to keep track of all sources used in research that will be cited in your paper or research, and are often required by instructors or professors.

Citations for Internet-based sources are based on the Modern Language Association (MLA) format, which is the standard format used for most research papers and assignments.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the author's name in the upper left-hand corner of a 3-by-5 inch index card. List the author's last name first, followed by a comma, then first name. Leave the card blank if no author is listed for the online article.

    • 2

Write the title of the online article next to the author's name. If no title is available, write the section or subheading of the website in which your research appears.

    • 3

Start a new line below the first and indent about 1 inch. Write "Online at" and follow with the web address (URL) of the web article or research used. An example of how to write the web address would be: http://webaddress.com/webarticle

    • 4

Begin a third line, also indented as the second line was, and write the date of publication in the following format: day, month, year. An example of the correct MLA format is "18 July 2009."

    • 5

Review your bibliography card. An example of a properly formatted web citation should look like this:

Doe, Jane. "How to write MLA format"

(indent 1 inch) Online at: http://webaddress.com/webarticle

      (indent 1 inch) 18 July 2009
