How to Cite a Direct Quote With More Than Four Lines

When writing an essay, it is important to reference scholarly works and other pieces in order to give your essay credibility. Taking quotations directly from the work of other people can help demonstrate a point in an essay, but it needs to be done so professionally and honestly. For this reason it is extremely important that when quoting a passage that is four lines or longer to follow the guidelines of the MLA or APA format to make sure that the original author of the passage gets credit for what he or she wrote.

Instructions

  1. APA Style

    • 1

Begin the quotation on a new line in your essay. This quote should be indented one half-inch from the left margin, which is the same location where a new paragraph would be located.

    • 2

Type the entire quotation you will be using on this new margin. The quote should be free-standing, meaning in its own paragraph.

    • 3

Omit quotation marks. Because the quote is by itself within your essay, no quotation marks are needed.

      Maintain double-spacing throughout the quotation.

Place the parenthetical citation after the closing punctuation mark.
