How to Write Psychological Research Reports & Essays

To write a psychological research report or essay, you will need to learn about the American Psychological Association (APA) style of writing. Many students are familiar with the Modern Language Association (MLA) style as the one they adhered to in high school and in their introductory English courses. However, scientific papers and reports, including those in psychology, are written in APA style. The key difference between MLA and APA is a series of headings designed to outline your findings in a logical way.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the header for the paper. Each page will include the header and the subsequent page number. The header in APA style is an abbreviation of your title, usually three to four words.

    • 2

Create your title page. For a psychological research report or essay, start halfway down the page and type the title of the paper, your name and your university.

    • 3

Write the Abstract. The Abstract is on its own page and explains the basic concepts of your psychological research report or essay in about 100 words.

    • 4

Go to the next page and write the introduction. The introductory paragraph is generally five sentences and explains the purpose of your psychological research report or essay and what you were trying to prove or accomplish.

    • 5

Type the next section directly under the introduction. Label it "Methods" and explain the methods you used in completing the research for the psychological research report or essay, such as the subjects your used, design of the experiment and procedures followed. These can each be their own sub-headings.

    • 6

Write the "Results" section and label it as such. This section should explain the final results of your experiment, research or project. You should not yet go into conclusions.

    • 7

Include a labeled "Discussion" section for your psychological research report or essay. This is where you discuss your findings, including conclusions, further possible research and implications of your findings.

    • 8

Type out the "References" section on the final page of your psychological research report or essay. This should include any outside sources you used to complete your research, experiment or project. Each should be typed in APA format. There are dozens of possible sources you can cite, each with its own format, so consult an APA reference book or the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association when making your reference page.
