Steps to Writing a How-to Paper

Finding information on the Internet is simple enough, but finding detailed information that doesn't leave you scratching your head is another story. Instructions with vague generalizations and assumptions can be more confusing than helpful. The writer of a how-to paper should base his instructions on the notion that his audience knows nothing about the task being described and therefore should take the reader step by step through the process with as much detail as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Start each sentence with an actionable verb. Avoid obvious statements, such as "Open the box."

    • 2

Tell the reader precisely what to do. Avoid vague sentences, such as "Disconnect the wiring." Instead, give detailed instructions: "Put your fingers on either side of the clipping and press in with your thumb to disconnect the wiring."

    • 3

Write short steps that are no longer than three sentences.

    • 4

Never refer to the previous step or use wordy phrases, such as "The next thing you should do is sand the wood." Instead, write, "Sand the wood."

    • 5

After you write your how-to paper, reread it. Try to read your paper from the point of view of someone who doesn't know how to do the task. Rewrite confusing passages. Edit your paper and correct any errors.
