How to Write Fill in the Blank Questions

When creating fill-in-the-blank questions, structuring sentences in a way that students understand the intent of each question is important. Whether or not a word bank is offered, students who have studied should know exactly which term properly fills the sentence. Creating a number of sentences that are clear while still challenging students can seem like a difficult undertaking, but the process just takes a little bit of practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a list of all the words you plan to include on the exam.

    • 2

Referring back to your lesson plans, write a sentence for each word that fits what was taught during the lesson. Leave the keyword in the sentence while writing out the exam.

    • 3

Employ a different type of sentence structure for each sentence to make the exam more interesting. Do not just use sentences that follow the "A _(dog)_ is an animal that barks" structure.

    • 4

Develop sentences that are specific without giving away the word: "In an atomic nucleus, _(protons)__ and __(neutrons)__ are located in the nucleus."

    • 5

Take the keyword out of each sentence, replacing the word with a blank. If desired, create a word bank for the missing words.
