How to Write a Proposal Offering Research Services

Oftentimes organizations and institutions that contribute scholarly and technical research to a field require outside research services to supplement their own researchers in producing these contributions. The purpose of such requests pertains to the institutions' recognition that some research problems are too large for internal researchers to handle. These institutions request research services through a call for proposal. Writing a proposal offering research services that responds to such a call for proposals requires you to identify your research's objectives, as well as why you believe those objectives to be important.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the topic for which your research services will be used. The purpose of an overview introduction is twofold. First, it demonstrates the extent of your familiarity with the topic for which research services are required. Secondly, it demonstrates the particular research approach or angle you will employ in researching the topic.

    • 2

Identify the research problem related to the topic for which research services have been requested. In articulating the problem, you implicitly demonstrate the goals of your proposed research. For example, if in responding to a call for proposals requesting research services related to the field of food science, you articulate the most pressing problem related to food science today as the obesity epidemic, the implication is that your research will focus on the obesity epidemic as it relates to food science.

    • 3

Articulate your research objectives related to the topic for which research services have been requested. While the introduction and problem statement imply your research angle, the objectives clearly indicate on what you research will focus and for what you think your research can be used.

    • 4

Outline the methodological approach you will take in your research. Indicate what types of field-specific literature you hope to review (scholarly articles, monographs, research studies), as well as what types of experiments you plan to conduct (lab work, field experiments, observation).

    • 5

List and identify all the resources you will use in conducting your research, including information on the purpose of each resource to the research. Resources include things like personnel, equipment, money, lab or research space, transportation, accommodation and so on.

    • 6

Identify yourself and your proposed research team and explain your particular qualifications to conduct the research you are proposing in response to the call for research services. List previous research you've conducted, as well as publications or studies you've authored.

    • 7

Review each of the subsections in your proposal, starting with the problem statement. Reemphasize the significance of the topic in your problem statement to the field for which research services have been requested. Explain the objectives of your research, how you will reach those objectives and your specific qualifications. End your conclusion by once again re-emphasizing the importance of this proposed research.
