How to Write a Speaking Proposal

Speaking proposals indicate to event organizers your intended topic and the style of the speech you plan to deliver at an event. Speaking proposals often serve two purposes: to ensure your preparedness for the speech, and to provide organizers an opportunity to approve or disapprove of potentially problematic content or stylistic elements of your speech with which they disagree. Writing a speaking proposal requires you to consider on what topic you'll speak, why you'll speak on it and how you hope your audience will benefit from your message.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the topic you plan to address during the course of your speech. Contextualize your topic within the framework of the event. For example, if you're delivering a speech to the American Heart Association, consider a topic related to hearts and heart health, either literally or figuratively. You might indicate your desire to talk about the importance of a balanced diet or the importance of having heart in sports.

    • 2

Indicate the stylistic elements of your speech. This includes elements such as the purpose of the speech (persuasive, informative), the tone of the speech (upbeat and celebratory or somber and reflective) and the staging components of the speech. For example, if you require a lectern or audiovisual equipment, you would indicate those needs in the paragraph focusing on style.

    • 3

Summarize the main points of your intended speech. Though you probably won't be able to indicate exactly what you're going to say, you should have a general idea of the point of your speech. For example, you might wish to convince the audience that littering is wrong, or inform them about the terror and tumult of the Johnstown Flood.

    • 4

Predict what your audience will take away from your speech. Perhaps you merely want your audience to be informed or entertained. Or you might want your audience to be persuaded or moved to action. With some speeches, you might strive to inspire your audience.
