How to Write Good Topics & Sentences

Writing correct topic sentences yields several benefits for both the writer and the reader. For the writer, a correct topic sentence frames the essay paragraph similar to the way the thesis frames the entire essay. For the reader, a clearly written topic sentence fosters comprehension and helps skim through the essay for pertinent information faster. Ideal sentences are constructed to be as clear and concise as possible, with every word serving a purpose to move along the essay.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain what the paragraph is about and tell the reader why it is important.

    • 2

Use verbs and nouns to describe your topic rather than adjectives and adverbs.

    • 3

Construct sentences using correct parallel structure so the beginning, middle and end of a sentence are identical in construction. For example, incorrect parallel structure is, "The drill instructor told the Marines they should get a lot of sleep, eat breakfast and to remember to stay alert." Correct parallel structure is, "The drill instructor told the Marines they should get a lot of sleep, eat breakfast and stay alert."

    • 4

Ensure each sentence is free from filler that detracts from the main point of the topic or sentence. Avoid breezy writing that calls attention to the writer and not the information at hand.

    • 5

Write with correct subject-verb agreement. For example, if the subject is singular the verb should report a singular action.
