How to Write a Paper About Webinars

Webinars have become a central way for educators, innovators and entrepreneurs to send their messages and lessons to people around the world. Webinars are informative lectures, classes or workshops delivered over the internet through videos, written lectures and visual aids. Two ways to approach writing about webinars is to write a response paper or a synthesis paper. A response paper outlines your responses and critiques to the webinars while a synthesis paper draws comparisons between different webinars. Both of these approaches will help you evaluate the most effective and reputable styles of the webinar format.

Instructions

  1. Response paper

    • 1

Outline the main points which were discussed in the webinar on the left hand side of a scratch piece of paper. For example, if the webinar is about health and fitness, outline the various exercises and meal plan pointers the speaker discussed. Many webinars will include slides and images, which can be used as guidelines in outlining the main arguments.

    • 2

Write your reactions, both positive and negative critiques of the webinar, on the right side of the paper next to each main point. For example, if the speaker spoke clearly and effectively, make a note on the right hand side of the paper as a positive aspect of the webinar. Also note down positive visual aids and communication skills. Comment on any arguments or points which did not make a convincing case or did not inform the audience in a clear presentation. Webinars, often based on internet resources, should also be based upon reputable sources which will correctly inform the audience.

    • 3

Write an introduction which reflects the overall impression the webinar made upon you. Condense your overall reaction to the webinar into a succinct sentence. This sentence will be your thesis statement and will often appear at the end of the first paragraph. Use the first paragraph to summarize the main points you will make throughout the paper. A sample thesis would be: "Jane's workout webinar contains fantastic visuals and strong, clear communication skills, but the content of the webinar could use some more information on the effectiveness of the program." Try to include a reaction which includes the visuals, the content of the webinar and the overall value of the information.

    • 4

Use the main body of the reaction paper to discuss each of the main points which struck you within the webinar. For example, three main points concerning many webinars could be visual effects, the strength of the webinar content and the clarity of the information. In each paragraph, clearly state specific reasons why you liked or disliked aspects of the webinar and details about the webinar format that are memorable. Because webinars are often based upon multi-media, take a paragraph to discuss each type of media or approach to the lesson and assess the value of using video, audio or writing within the webinar.

    • 5

Write a conclusion about the webinar. In this section of the paper, you will want to state your overall impression of the webinar and its value to you. In this section of the paper you can also make suggestions for improvements or changes you would like to see in the future for webinar content. Webinars can suffer from misinformation, poor editing, or over-pricing. Mention these aspects of the webinar culture and how any setbacks could be improved in future web-based seminars.

    Synthesis Paper

    • 6

Choose the webinars you would like to compare and contrast. You will need to decide upon at least two webinars to discuss, but you can discuss multiple webinars as well. The goal of the synthesis paper is to create a concise discussion of the various elements of the webinars, deciding which formats of audio, visual and written information are the most effective and useful for the audience within the webinar format. This style of paper will uncover the most reputable, professional approaches to web-based content in the information age and how you believe web-based seminars should be structured.

    • 7

Outline the items which are similar in each of the webinars. Start with examining the overall visual aspects of the webinar. Some webinars are approached through informative e-newsletters, while others will be approached through video. Assess the overall organization, professionalism and effectiveness of the visual layout and design. Further topics for comparison are the communication skills used in the webinar, the quality of the information presented, and the overall usefulness of the webinar material.

    • 8

Outline the most notable differences between the webinars. For example, the webinars may both focus on physical exercise but each may pursue a different style. One webinar may focus on yoga, while the other webinar focuses on traditional aerobic fitness moves. Another difference may be in the format of the webinar, did one include a video presentation while the other simply transmitted the information through an audio recording? Note down which approach seems more applicable and useful.

    • 9

Format the paper using the comparisons and contrasts you developed in steps 2 and 3. Open the paper with a clear introduction which states the overall impression the webinars made upon you. Clearly state what elements of webinars are valuable to you as well as give a short introduction to each of the webinars you will be discussing in the paper.

    • 10

Write the body of the paragraph by dissecting one aspect of all of the webinars in a single paragraph. Refrain from writing about more than one aspect of the webinars in one paragraph. For example, spend a paragraph discussing the visual values and similarities between the webinars. Be sure to include a paragraph which discusses the value of the information the webinars present. Ask yourself if these webinars give reputable information, if they use believable resources and if they are honest in their approach.

    • 11

Close the paper with a recap of the points in the webinars you found valuable and a small discussion of ways you would improve upon the webinar format, such as by including more visuals or by adding more factual content. Like the response paper, discuss possible ways the webinar format as a whole can be improved, changed or made more effective. This approach will open up the debate on web-based information and technology.
