Type the publication year and page number(s) in parentheses immediately following any quotes used within the body of the paper. For example, if you quoted text from pages 13 through 14 in a textbook on the subject and the textbook was published in 2006, you would follow that quote with (2006:13-14). The period for the sentence comes after, not before, the parentheses so the association is clearly understood to be with the quote.
Avoid using strategies for citing quotes made by other authors such as "Jones, as cited in Watson..." Instead, the AAA says to use the cited work then place the citation of the other author in parenthesis. For example, "Jones found (Watson 2009)..."
Format all quotes that take more than four lines into block quotes. Block quotes are indented, as opposed to in-line with the rest of the body of text and if more than one paragraph is included in the block quote, do not indent the first paragraph but indent the second and additional paragraphs. Place the citation in brackets, for example [Smith 1999], at the end of the block quote following the final period, not before it.
Cite quotes from interviews or conversations that are from unpublished sources. Include the name of the person interviewed, the name of the interviewer, and the date (month, day and year) of the interview in parentheses at the end of the citation inside the final period.
Create the reference list for the end of the paper. The list of references must be alphabetical even if not appearing in alphabetical order within the paper; this makes it easier to locate the references from the citations within the body of the paper, many of which only include the last name of the author and the publication year. If multiple publications from the same author were used, list the references in alphabetical order by publication title. Use all of the authors' full names in your reference list, though the use of "et al." within the writing is permitted for citing works by more than three authors. If the authors typically publish with their initials, rather than full names, this is permitted as well.
