How to Open a Conclusion Paragraph

The conclusion of a paper provides a last chance to convince the reader that your facts back up the thesis, and that the thesis has meaning in the reader's life. Like the rest of the essay, there's not a pattern you follow that will convince your reader 100 percent of the time. However, three main approaches exist that you can take to begin your conclusion. The opening you choose sets the framework for the rest of your conclusion.

Instructions

    • 1

Recall something you said in the introduction. For example, if you made reference to a historical figure in your opening paragraph, bring that figure back for the first sentence of your conclusion.

    • 2

Restate your thesis, but with different words. Use an example from the body of your paper. For example, if a fact from the third paragraph supports your thesis, repeat that fact to help show that your thesis is correct.

    • 3

Use a transition that shows you're finished presenting the evidence and are about to present your closing arguments. For example, call into question what all of the facts mean, then explain the facts by tying them into your thesis statement and show why your statement matters.
