Where did writing first start?
Writing first started in ancient Mesopotamia, in present day Iraq, approximately 3500 BC. Writing was invented as a way to record economic transactions and maintain bureaucratic records. The earliest writing system, known as cuneiform, was developed by the Sumerians, who used wedge-shaped marks on clay tablets to represent objects and ideas. Cuneiform script eventually spread to other civilizations in the region, including the Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians.
