A report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the employment outlook for auto mechanics is expected to grow at about 5 percent through 2018, which is slower than average for other jobs in the country. However, mechanics cannot be outsourced, making the profession one that is not subject to having jobs moved overseas. Mechanics who have post-secondary education and training in specific automotive systems, such as hybrid fuel technology, have a better chance of finding a job than those without higher education. The question is which type of training you want to seek, either a certificate or a degree.
Certificate programs are available at technical and community colleges. They last from around six months to one year. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is a must-have in the auto mechanics industry, and many of these programs provide experience and training necessary to achieve ASE certification.
Community and technical colleges also offer a two year associate degree program for auto mechanics. These programs include classes outside of auto mechanics, such as English and math. They are more in-depth and provide more training than a certificate program.
Many post-secondary training options for mechanics involve some on-the-job training. Some auto dealers and manufacturers sponsor two year training programs at colleges in which students also work in the service departments of sponsoring dealerships. They work with a mentor to gain practical experience.
Before you enroll in a certificate or degree program, ask whether the institution is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, how strong the connections between auto manufacturers and dealers are, how experienced the instructors are and whether the institution offers job placement services. Also find out if hands-on training is available, what curriculum the school uses, what the job placement rate is and if the facilities are up to industry standards.
