Single Ply Roofing RRO Certification

To become a registered roof observer (RRO), individuals must submit an application to RCI (formerly the Roof Consultants Institute) and pass a written examination, which tests participants on a number of issues related to single-ply roofing, among other topics.
  1. Single-Ply Roofing

    • According to the Environmental Protection Agency, single-ply roofing is either a flexible or semi-flexible membrane usually made of rubber or plastic. It comes in rolls and may be fastened to a roof using glue or a mechanical process. Certification exams ask questions on this process.

    Study Materials

    • RRO examination questions are drawn from a wide range of study materials. A short list includes the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association's (ARMA's) "Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual," RCI's "Roof Top Quality Assurance Manual" and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association's (MBMA's) "Metal Roofing Design Guide."

    Examination Fees

    • As of February 2011, the cost of the application and examination is $250 for RCI members and $375 for non-RCI members. Annual renewals cost $75 for RCI members and $125 for non-members. Late applications incur a $100 charge (members) and $125 charge (non-members).
