Locate English courses in your area. Universities such as Indiana University and Valparaiso University have language centers that offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Community centers and libraries throughout Indianapolis also offer ESL classes, so look in your neighborhood for free courses.
Research different classes. Not all English classes are the same. If you want to learn English, you need a class that fits your needs. It is important to find a course that teaches material at your skill level, whether you are a beginner or just looking to improve the English skills you already have.
Choose a class that feels right for you. Does it fit your budget? Will your schedule allow you to attend every class? Do you get along with the instructor? Does the class cover the material you need to learn?
Sign-up and attend your class regularly. Not only can your instructor help you learn English, he can give you opportunities to practice with other students.
Purchase a CD program that will help you learn English on your own. This will allow you to learn at your own pace and in your own time. Be warned, however, that many programs, such as Rosetta Stone, may be more expensive than a formal English class.
Practice daily. You will remember what you learn if you immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. Try labeling household items or reading out loud to yourself in English. Watch English television shows or listen to English music. Read road signs or business names around Indianapolis. Be creative, and discover ways that you can practice your English every day.
Find a practice partner. Nothing helps you learn English more quickly than conversing in the language. Conversation helps your comprehension as well as your pronunciation. Enlist a family member or native speaker to help you practice by speaking to you in English. You can get extra practice with anyone you meet as you travel around Indianapolis.
