What Animals Live in a Temperate Forest?

Much of the world's forested areas fall under the temperate biome category. Temperate forests consist of deciduous trees such as maples, birches and oaks. These perennial trees lose their foliage every winter to make way for new leaves. Temperate forests also harbor a wide variety of wildlife species. During the summer, the trees' canopies provide shelter for inhabitants. Some wildlife species use the wood from deciduous trees to make shelters.
  1. Mammals

    • Beavers are the second-largest rodents in the world. Adult males grow up to 5 feet in length, which includes their tail. Beavers are found in the temperate deciduous forests of Canada and the United States. They live in colonies of approximately eight members and dwell in large mounds made from mud and wood. They are also nocturnal and hardly come out during the day.

Found in India and Southeast Asia, dholes are a canine mammal species. Dholes are endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN. Only 2,500 dholes exist in the wild, as of March 2011. Dholes live in moist and dry temperate deciduous forests.

    Birds

    • The American bald eagle, the U.S. national bird, dwells in temperate deciduous forest biomes. Bald eagles are approximately 3 feet tall and have a wingspan of 5 to 8 feet. The female bald eagle is generally larger than the male. The bird chooses one mate during its lifetime, which is about 25 years in the wild. Bald eagles are identified by the white feathers on their heads and the brown feathers on their bodies.

Cardinals are red birds found in Canada and the eastern United States. Some species have been seen in the southwestern U.S. Cardinals have red feathers, except for the black feathers surrounding their eyes. These birds are typically found on the edge of forests.

    Reptiles

    • Located in temperate forests in Canada, South America and the United States, snapping turtles are shelled reptiles that grow up to 14 inches long. According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, they are threatened and endangered in some regions of the world, including Ontario. Causes for endangerment include fragmentation of habitat and overhunting.

Blue racer snakes are found in temperate forests in the eastern United States and Canada. They are approximately 6 feet long when fully mature and can live as many as 10 years. Blue racers are usually found on the edge of forests and riparian areas.

    Amphibians

    • Northern cricket frogs are found in the eastern United States and Canada. These frogs primarily live in temperate forests with wetlands and marsh areas. A V-shape marking between the frog's eyes distinguishes it from other frog species. Northern cricket frogs are approximately 2 inches long when they reach adulthood.

Temperate deciduous forests are also home to spotted dusky salamanders; these 5-inch long amphibians are found throughout the southern United States. According to the Outdoor Alabama website, this salamander is important in the ecology system because it preys on and prevents the overpopulation of arthropods.
