Missions of California: Educational Projects

Catholic California missions are the first to come to mind when reflecting upon California missions. These missions integrated much of Spanish and Native American life during early civilization in the state. Mission-related educational objectives, however, are no longer relegated to the Catholic missions. The Southern Baptist church also has educational missionary objectives rooted in California.
  1. Mission Olive Preservation, Restoration and Education Project

    • The Mission Olive Preservation, Restoration and Education Project is a non-profit corporation governed by the California Olive Oil Council to restore olive trees at California missions. Farmers and olive tree experts collaborate to replant olive trees and harvest the oil for sale and use in the Catholic church. Participating missions include the Dominican Sisters of Mission in San Jose, Mission Santa Cruz, Sonoma's Mission San Francisco Solano, Mission Soledad and Mission La Purisima Concepcion. Members of the communities surrounding these missions are invited to presentations to learn about the history of the olive, the health benefits of olive oil and general facts about olive oil processing.

Christian Men's and Women's Job Corps

    • The Christian Women's Job Corps and the Christian Men's Job Corps are missions of the California Southern Baptist Convention. They are welfare-to-work ministries operating out of six sites in California. Participants are accepted regardless of religious affiliation. In formal classroom settings, they learn effective employment skills like basic computer training, medical assistance, dental assistance and budgeting skills. In addition, Bible study sessions are conducted both at participants' homes and central locations. Programs and one-on-one mentoring seek to instill esteem and confidence in adults who may have never worked or were incarcerated.

    California Nurses on Mission

    • The California Southern Baptist Convention Missions Advancement Group governs the annual continuing education refresher course for the California Nurses on Mission project. California Nurses on Mission is the state chapter name for the Baptist Nursing Fellowship, an organization of Christian health care professionals. The refresher course is free of charge and open to member nurses who want to use their health care expertise and knowledge of the Gospel to further public health objectives in their communities and overseas. The California Nurses on Mission project also funds overseas expenses, books, training materials, magazines and medical supplies.

    Mission San Juan Capistrano

    • Mission San Juan Capistrano offers several educational programs to area elementary school students, two of which align with the fourth grade California Social Science Content Standards. The 45-minute Mission Matters class teaches children about the history of the Mission's founding Native Americans. Students learn about rope and adobe brick-making in a garden setting. Children who view the Making the Grade presentation learn about geology and architecture. Active participation involves the building of an arch and collecting samples of soil.
