Steel Erection Supervisor Training

Supervising steel erection projects requires a specialized set of tools and knowledge. It is ultimately the supervisor's responsibility to ensure that all health and safety measures are in place and that all employees follow them. Supervisor trainers must be qualified according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration's standard entitled 1926 -- Safety and Health Regulations for Construction.
  1. General

    • Steel erection supervisor training must include information on common hazards encountered during steel erection work. These hazards include flames and sparks due to welding, metal fragments, toxic fumes, unsafe elevated working practices and electrical dangers.

    Falls

    • Steel erection often involves working at dangerous heights. All supervisors must be aware of proper harness practices, the appropriate use of guard rails and correct procedures for inspecting and maintaining fall protection systems.

    Special Circumstances

    • Some steel erection workers must perform special functions with which the supervisor must be familiar. These include multiple-lift rigging, connecting and working in controlled decking zones.
