How to Get a Burning Passion for a Goal

You have set goals in many areas of your life and have achieved varying degrees of success. In some cases, you set a goal, decided on a course of action and achieved success in record time. Other times, you experienced frustration and discarded or forgot about the goal. You may wonder why you did not achieve all your goals. The answer is very simple: You did not have a burning passion for some of those goals.

Set a SMART goal. SMART is an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound. When you set a goal that meets these criteria, you have a better change of succeeding. For example, if you wish to lose weight, set the following goal: "I will lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks or less." The goal is a specific and realistic one that can be achieved within the time frame.

Create a tangible representation of the goal. For example, if you plan to write a best-selling novel, set the following goal and say to yourself, "I will write a novel that achieves best-seller status within the next five years." Photocopy The New York Times Best Seller list. White out the date and one of the books on the list. Replace these with a date, five years from today, and the title of your book. Carry this list with you and look at it throughout the day.

Wake up each day thinking about ways to achieve your goal. For example, if you intend to improve your work performance, set the following goal and say to yourself, "I will be public relations director by March of 2012." As you prepare for work, glance at your agenda and plan your strategy for the meeting, luncheon or sales campaign. Decide whether to volunteer to chair an additional committee or help with fundraising community efforts. Do not overextend yourself, instead choose wisely and participate in activities that further your goal.

Make a list of all the benefits you will derive from a particular goal. Identify why this goal is worthwhile and how it will improve the quality of your life. For example, if you intend to buy a larger house, set the following goal and say to yourself, "I will buy a house in the Elmview subdivision by November 2013." As you create your list, involve your spouse or partner and children in the process. Brainstorm all the benefits of living in the new house, such as more bedrooms and bathrooms, a swimming pool, larger lawn and deck, better school, proximity to shopping plaza. The more details you add, the more motivated you will be to achieve this goal.

Enjoy the journey. Some goals require mental and emotional stamina, especially if the results won't be achieved within the near future. For example, if you intend to complete an online Master's of Business Administration, or MBA, program, set the following goal and say to yourself, "I will complete the MBA program within five years time." As you complete each course of the program, reward yourself with a short vacation or special treat. If possible, meet regularly for coffee or drinks with other online students. Involve your family and friends in the process. Keep them up-to-date with your progress and be open to any of their suggestions.
