How to Change a Lock on a Combination Safe

Mechanical locks are the most used access devices on combination safes (see reference 1 page 5 under lock security metrics). Changing the lock on the combination safe is essential to increase the security of the valuables inside, which might be expensive jewelry or money. A combination safe with three character digits has a higher probability of being hacked into than one having four character digits. Changing the digits in the lock is a task that can go a long way in saving your property from burglars.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the desired combination digits on the dial to open the door of the safe. Turn the lever of the door of the safe to the 'lock' position to ensure the door is locked while in the open position. This prevents you from locking the valuables inside in case anything goes wrong while still changing the combination lock.

    • 2

Rotate the combination dial four full revolutions in a counterclockwise direction and stop when the first of the combination numbers is perfectly below the index that shows the open position. This index is located at the noon position of an ordinary clock.

    • 3

Turn the dial three full revolutions in a clockwise direction to the point where the second combination number is aligned directly below the index which denotes the open position of the combination safe.

    • 4

Align the index pointer to the third combination digit by spinning again the dial two complete revolutions in a counterclockwise direction. Leave the last digit at the change index position.

    • 5

Turn the combination dial slowly in a clockwise direction till you approach the mark labeled 95. Upon reaching this point, again turn the combination dial till the index pointer coincides with the mark where the lock bolt will automatically wince and stop further rotating.

    • 6

Look for the position of the access hole at the back cover of the combination lock. Once you locate the access hole, insert the change key into the access hole (change key hole) and ensure it is fully inserted before you turn it 90 degrees clockwise to put the lock of the safe in a neutral position. You can now change the combination digits.

    • 7

Dial your new digits on the changing index position following the order of counterclockwise-clockwise-counterclockwise for the first three digits respectively. Leave the last number of the new combination on the change index position which is located at the 1:00 position. Your new combination is now set.

    • 8

Test the new combination with the door still in the open position. Lock and unlock the door at least three times to verify whether the lock is working appropriately.
