Primary Language Resources

Primary language resources are audio and visual materials that native speakers produce. When learning another language, primary resources that are in your target language, or language you wish to learn, are incredibly useful, as they supply numerous examples of authentic language. You can use them to learn new structures and vocabulary as well as consolidating those that you are already familiar with.
  1. Books and Newspapers

    • Books and newspapers provide a rich source of your target language and are often readily available. Graded reader books are especially useful, as you can select a book appropriate to your language level to avoid the frustration of constantly having to refer to your dictionary. Alternatively, you can select a book that you have already read in your native language making it easier to follow the story or plot. Newspapers also are a valuable resource as they will usually contain at least something of interest to you and, if you are not yet of a language level to read entire articles, you can simply read and translate the headlines.

    Internet Radio

    • Internet radio gives you the opportunity to listen to your target language whenever you wish and, unless you are learning a highly obscure language, you will almost certainly be able to find one that interests you. Depending on your language level, the speech may seem fast and difficult to understand at first, but the more you listen to it, the more familiar it will become to you and the easier it will be to understand.

    Movies

    • Watching movies is a highly effective and enjoyable way to reinforce vocabulary and structures. Most movies are available with subtitles meaning you can listen in your target language while reading in your native language. On a second or third viewing you may choose to use subtitles in the target language and, as you become more familiar with the movie and its language, you can watch it without any subtitles at all.

    Songs

    • Songs in your target language provide an excellent resource for learning another language because the lyrics are often readily available online. Most people enjoy listening to songs repeatedly, and this continued exposure to the target language makes vocabulary easier to remember. In addition, after you have heard the song four or five times, you will be able to sing along to parts of it, further reinforcing vocabulary and structures.
