If you are reading this article, you already know quite a bit of English, but what if you had to get someone to read it to you because you are either new to this country and English is unfamiliar to you, or you are illiterate? Either situation is one you will want to remedy as soon as possible and, fortunately, as a Seattle resident, plenty of resources are available to you. Whether you require English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction or adult literacy education, there is plenty of help.

Visit your local public library. Most public libraries offer free ESL and adult literacy instruction. Take a friend or family member with you to help you read information about free classes in either ESL or adult literacy. Have your friend or family member act as an interpreter to ensure the librarian understands your needs and that you understand the librarian's advice.

As a person with no English language skills in a country in which English is the predominant language, you are considered to be a person in crisis. Fortunately Seattle is a city with good resources for people like you and has a thorough Crisis Resource Directory. Have an English-speaking friend or family member search through this directory and find additional resources that will help you either learn English or attain literacy.

Faithfully attend the ESL or adult literacy classes offered in your area. Take advantage of the other resources, such as videos and CDs that you can check out from your library and use to enhance your learning.
