Select a language that you have an interest in, such as one that helps with your career goals. Being motivated to learn a specific language makes learning it less challenging.
Enroll in a class teaching the desired language. Colleges, language schools and community groups offer language classes. Visit the classes to determine which better suits your schedule and needs. If you are willing to pay more, you can obtain private instruction.
Obtain a dictionary that translates words between English and the language you are learning. Look up words that you do not understand. Keep a list of these words for reference in conversation.
Write a vocabulary word in your native language on one side of an index card and the translation in the foreign language on the other side. Stick the index cards to items around the house to help you remember the vocabulary words.
Rent films and purchase music CDs in the foreign language. Listen to the CDs regularly to develop your listening comprehension. Watch the movies in the foreign language. Some movies have an option for English subtitles.
Obtain books in the foreign language. Start with children's books and gradually proceed to novels to improve your language skills and learn new vocabulary.
Practice your skills by finding people in your area who speak the language you are learning. Some coffee shops and bookstores hold foreign language conversation hours.
Study the foreign language daily. Set aside approximately 30 minutes a day to study the foreign language.
