The Supplies Needed for Salon Businesses

The supplies needed by a salon depend on the services it offers. Ensuring a constant supply of products and equipment is important for success. Due to the large number of products, it's economical for salons to do business on a regular basis with a wholesale supplier. Look for a supplier big enough to handle bulk orders yet flexible enough to supply small orders.
  1. Cleaning Equipment

    • A salon should maintain high standards of cleanliness. Cleaning supplies include buckets and basins, mops, dust cloths, sponges, washing detergent, bleach, and disinfectant. If a vacuum cleaner is used, replace the bag on a monthly basis. Due to frequent use, mops wear out quickly and should be replaced on a regular basis. Have sponges at each sink and extras as replacements. Clients won't come back to a dirty salon, so keeping it clean needs to be a high priority.

    Hair Tools

    • Since a salon receives all kinds of hair styling requests, a good supply of styling tools is necessary. Salons should be equipped with all types of combs, brushes, driers and heating tools. Most of these tools are prone to breaking, so replacements or alternate tools should always be on hand. As tempting as it might be to go cheap, it's always best to invest in quality tools that will provide better results and last longer.

    Hair Products

    • Each salon should provide its clients with a wide range of hair products from which to choose. Salons should consider the age range of their clients and stock age-appropriate products. The weather will often dictate the products to use, for example, heat protection products during the summer. Each stylist should have her own products at her workstation, and shampoo and conditioner should be available at each sink.

    Towels and Aprons

    • You can choose to stock towels in large enough numbers so you don't have to regularly restock them, and use the services of a towel supplier, which will deliver clean towels based on the schedule you establish. Be sure to discard towels that become "ratty" or stained; clients will think less of a salon that uses less-than-quality towels. Clean aprons are also a must, for both clients and stylists. Those that become stained need to be discarded.
