The National Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification is offered through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. The certification was created in 1985 and has been awarded to over 21,000 individuals, as of 2011. To become certified, strength and conditioning coaches must pass an exam covering topics in exercise science, exercise techniques, program design and nutrition. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree and be CPR-certified. College seniors enrolled in an accredited institution are also eligible to take the certification exam.
The Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified designation is offered through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. The certification ensures that strength and conditioning coaches have a strong understanding of lifting techniques and the expertise to work at the college or professional level. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree, be CPR-certified, complete an internship and pass an examination. The written exam covers topics in muscle physiology, bioenergetics and metabolism, nuclear muscular concepts, and body composition and weight management.
The Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association also offers the Master Strength and Conditioning Coach certification. Applicants must have at least 12 years of full-time experience in the field and be an active member of the association. Applicants also must validate their work history. Topics on the written exam include nutrition and supplements, speed development, free weights, the cardiorespiratory system and goal setting.
The International Sports Science Association has offered the Strength and Conditioning Certification since 1988. Strength and conditioning professionals who earn this certification must have extensive knowledge of strength and conditioning involving the chest, shoulders, arms, abs, legs and triceps. Study materials include a 530-page textbook and DVD. Certification prepares coaches to work with professional and amateur athletes. Applicants must complete online quizzes and a comprehensive examination.
