Games to Be Played While Learning Irregular Verbs in Spanish

Some verbs in the Spanish language have irregular forms for all tenses. There's no way to tell if a verb is going to be irregular unless you memorize the different verbs. Though it seems complex, once you study the language you quickly learn when to use irregular tenses. One way to learn these irregular forms is with different games using the words.
  1. Bingo

    • Hand out blank bingo cards to your class. Start by asking them to write the irregular forms of specific verbs in each box. This will make them practice using the verb. You can also write the verbs that will be used on the board and ask them to copy them onto the card. Use clues such as "the irregular 'yo' form of 'tener' " to look for the irregular verb on their card. When someone achieves an entire row vertically, horizontally or diagonally, they win. Use candy or extra credit points as a prize.

    Flashcards

    • Ask your students to complete a set of flashcards with the irregular form of the verb on one side and the translation on the other side. Pair the students up and ask them to review the card with each other. First ask them to use the cards with the Spanish irregular verb on the outside and they have to guess the translation. For greater difficulty, reverse the cards so they must respond with the irregular verb to the translation.

    Skits

    • Hand out a card with an irregular Spanish verb on it to each student or groups of students. Ask them to act out the word on their card while the rest of the class has to guess what word they are acting out. The class should also answer what verb it is an irregular form of.

    Wordsearch

    • Create a word search using irregular forms of verbs. Instead of providing a list of words to find in the puzzle, use clues such as "the imperfect 'yo' form of 'ser.' " The students would then look for "era." Students can work individually or in pairs on these word searches. You could even have them perform the word searches on the computer for each other for extra practice.
