What Are Marriage Superstitions?

A wedding day is the most significant event in the life of a bride and groom. Many customs and traditions surround the event that creates the marital union, including some superstitions regarding its elements. The presence of bridesmaids at a wedding and the tossing of the bouquet both have a background based on such beliefs. The ring finger and traditional rice throw as couples leave a church also have their source in superstition.
  1. Throwing The Bouquet

    • At weddings, it is commonly known that all the single women crowd together in hopes of catching the bouquet when the bride tosses it to them. The belief behind this practice is that whichever girl catches it will be the next one to be married. This belief exists because it is thought that the bride is blessed on her wedding day and has the power to extend that blessing to someone else.

    Rice Shower

    • As newly married couples descend church steps into their waiting public, tradition dictates that they have rice thrown at them. This tradition is in practice because it is believed that doing so will bless the newlyweds. The blessings bestowed include endless fertility, wealth and health.

    Ring Finger

    • There is a reason why wedding rings are always worn on the ring finger. The superstition behind this idea is that the ring finger is the one that contains a vein of love that connects it to the person's heart.

    Bridesmaids

    • Bridemaids are at weddings to adorn the wedding party and help the bride with all her needs. This was not their original purpose, however. This collection of ladies helping the bride were present to confuse any evil spirits that might threaten the bride. By surrounding her with their presence, they were able to protect her from any bad omens.
