The Wilson's storm petrel is a marine bird that is native to Antarctica during the austral summer, or from November to April. This bird breeds near the coastline of Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and the Tierra del Fuego Islands. Wilson's storm petrels leave the Southern Hemisphere in late April and May. For the austral winter, they fly to lands in the Northern Hemisphere. These birds are carnivorous and prey on marine fish and crustaceans. When hunting, Wilson's storm petrels submerge in the water to find their prey.
Tthe greater shearwater is a marine bird native to the Falkland Islands and southern Africa. Greater shearwaters breed in the Southern Hemisphere from September to May, before migrating to North America for the austral winter. In North America, greater shearwaters live in New England and eastern Canada. These birds are named "shearwater" from their flight patterns, which consists of several flaps and then gliding. Greater shearwaters hunt for fish and invertebrates by skimming the ocean's surface or barely diving into the water.
The only two migratory parrots in the world -- swift parrot and orange-bellied parrot -- are native to Australia. During the austral summer, both birds breed in southern New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, Australia's island territory. The breeding season for both parrots is September through March. When March arrives, these parrots migrate to northern Australia. Specimens in Tasmania are forced to fly over the Bass Strait, which separates the island from the mainland. Both the swift parrot and orange-bellied parrot are considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List.
Royal terns are one of the few North American birds that migrate north during the winter. These sea birds spend the summer, from March to November, breeding on the coastlines of North Carolina and Virginia. From November to March, some royal terns migrate north to New England. Some royal terns live in the Caribbean Sea and are year-round residents of the region. Non-breeding royal terns are usually the birds that do not migrate. Royal terns build nests on the shorelines and feed on shrimp and fish.
