Senior military schools offer an opportunity for higher education and leadership training for students in an environment of discipline and organization. For example, Texas A&M University offers an opportunity for degrees in both technical and non-technical fields. There are various scholarships, loans and grants available for students who desire to pursue education in these institutions including the ROTC scholarship, the Georgia Military Scholarship and Leadership scholarships which offers extra financial support of a maximum of $2,000.
The military training in a senior military college does not automatically require the cadet to join military forces upon graduation. This does not apply to other ROTC programs for example, in service academies or individuals in civilian colleges. The college offers you the opportunity to study in a military training environment, but you may select to follow a career path as a civilian upon graduation. However, for cadets under the ROTC scholarship programs, they have an obligation to commission to the military after completion of education and training in a senior military school.
Individuals in a senior military school have the advantage of undergoing a guaranteed full training and education course. According to the USA Code, Title 10 of the Armed Forces, the unit under which an individual in the senior military college is training is not subject to termination or a reduction in the time period by the Secretary of Defense or the Secretaries of the military departments. The individual can fully complete his unit unless there is a personal request from the college. This defers from other ROTC programs and thus offers these individuals an opportunity to undergo adequate training before graduation.
A graduate from a senior military college who wishes to commission herself to the military service has the benefit of having a guaranteed position in active duty service upon completion of her training and education. This is possible as long the military certifies her physical and medical fitness and the professor of military science at the institution certifies her commission to the military. This benefit is not awarded to other graduates of military programs.
