How to Say Color Names in Spanish

Knowing the main color names in Spanish can help you with descriptions and shopping. In Spanish, the adjective always follows the noun and its gender also agrees with the noun. For multiples, make sure both the noun and adjective are pluralized. For example, a black dress would be "vestido negro" and red bottles would be "botellas rojas." For verde, gris, and azul you don't need to worry about gender agreement since the color name will stay the same either way.

Instructions

    • 1

Before you say a color name, determine whether the noun you're describing is masculine or feminine. Pronounce the word like in parentheses, but try to look at its actual spelling. Red - Rojo (RO-ho) Orange - Anaranjado (un-a-ran-HA-do) Yellow - Armarillo (ar-mar-EE-yo)

    • 2

Determine the gender of the applicable noun and pronounce it as shown in parentheses. For purple, "morado" will be a darker shade than "violeta." Green - Verde (VARE-day) Blue - Azul (a-SZOOL) Purple - Morado (more-A-Do) or Violeta (vee-o-LET-a) Pink - Rosa (ROSE-a)

    • 3

Decide the noun's gender and pronounce as directed. For the different browns, both are always acceptable but generally speaking, "morena" will be used in Spain and "castaño" in Latin America. Black - Negro (NEG-ro) White - Blanco (BLAN-co) Gray - Gris (greece) Brown - Morena (mo-RAY-na) or Castaño (cas-TAN-yo)
