Definition of Limit Switch

One type of limit switch you might be familiar with is similar to a standard light switch (known as a maintained limit switch). It remains in the on or off position until force is applied. Limit switches are used to turn on or off a device when triggered by the targeted object when it comes into contact with the actuator. The actuator is the automated portion of the limit switch (vs. the manual portion of a light switch) that sets the mechanism into motion.
  1. Types of Limit Switches

    • Limit switches are available in different models: precision, small precision, compact and micro. Various switch housings are offered for different environments.

    Operator Styles for Different Applications

    • Simple operator styles such as button, roller and lever types afford versatility in the specific application. Limit switches can come in normally on (NOI) and normally closed (NCI) positions.

    Actuation Applications

    • Some limit switches are available with conduit entry. Others are made triple-sealed for wash-down or hydraulic applications. Others are made with die-cast metal housings for heavy-duty uses in rugged environments.

    Benefits of Limits Switches

    • Limit switches are reliable, rugged and easy to install in a variety of applications and environments. Parts such as levers and buttons are easy and inexpensive to replace and maintain.

Types of Careers that Require Knowledge of Limit Switches

    • Engineers and electricians must know about these simple devices. Construction workers, maintenance mechanics and purchasing agents can also benefit from a basic education in how these devices function.
