Definition of Invention

Invention means to come up with a unique idea, thought or fabrication; a new object, device or process that no one has seen or heard of before; a discovery; a talent in inventing that was creatively produced from an imaginative individual. In order to secure a person's innovative invention from being stolen by others it must be patented.
  1. Ideas and Processes

    • Fresh ideas, thoughts and fabrications are found in novels, scripts, poems, musical compositions, dance choreography, movies and art pieces.

    Objects and Devices

    • The creation of objects and devices incorporates tangible things that a person is able to use such as a piano, a telephone, a plane or a TV.

    Discover

    • Finding, discovering or stumbling upon something new such as Columbus finding America or an archaeologist discovering a new dinosaur may be thought of as an invention, because the person made connections almost as a writer connects words to produce a new creation.

    Talent

    • Certain people have a talent for inventing by expressing themselves through interacting with other people and/or creating something ingenious. Examples of famous inventors include: Thomas Edison, who created, or rather, improved upon, the light bulb; Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the printing press in the 15th century; Orville and Wilbur, who in 1903 produced the first functioning airplane and Karl Benz, who constructed the first working automobile in 1885.

    Patent

    • The requirements that must be met in order for a patent to be issued include that the invention must be original, practical and not apparent at the time it was created. Also, an additional invention of improvement on a process or device is also considered.
