The Use of Thermoplastics

Thermoplastics are defined by remelting upon heating. If a thermoplastic construction outlives its usefulness, it can be melted and molded for different use. This makes thermoplastics advantageous over thermosetting polymers that are not as easily recycled.
  1. Guitar Picks

    • Guitar picks are made out of various polymers today but many interested in music consider celluloid guitar picks a professional's instrument. Celluloid is a thermoplastic developed by Isaiah Hyatt in 1872.

    Car Headlights

    • Acrylic is a transparent thermoplastic used in similar ways to glass. For example, car headlights today are made of acrylic.

    Keck Clips

    • Keck clips used to hold test tubes together are molded from a thermoplastic called polyacetal. In lab environments, keck clips are invaluable to smooth operations.

    Teflon

    • Teflon is made primarily from fluoropolymers, a class of thermoplastics with carbon-fluoride bonds. Such bonding makes fluoropolymer products exceptionally resistant to acidic corrosion and require exceptionally high temperatures to melt and re-mold.

    Shopping Bags

    • The famous plastic shopping bag is made from polypropylene, an early and common thermoplastic.
