How to Gain Knowledge Through Experience

Vincent Van Gogh once said, "What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?" The path to acquiring knowledge could be as simple as taking a class or reading a book, but empirical experience may be the best way to eek out the meaning of life. Observing nature in order to determine how a thing functions is an empirical approach to learning; it is knowledge gained through observation and personal experience. Attaining knowledge in an empirical fashion is the root of a human being's education and may still be applied at any age.

Instructions

    • 1

Find time to be alone. Watch and listen to the sights, smells and sounds around you. Try to deduce the structure of what you see simply by looking at it, imagine what elements it may be composed and how it interacts with its environment.

    • 2

Try something new. Opportunities for new experiences present themselves everyday. Swinging by that new Ethiopian restaurant could open up culinary vistas, and experiencing cultures abroad could give your a perspective you have never had before.

    • 3

Ask questions. Asking questions of people may garner answers that reveal truths you never imagined. Asking the right questions when traveling could lead to a story that becomes an unforgettable moment in your life. Asking questions requires you to engage with the world around you in a way observation cannot.
