Pneumatic systems operate typically at lower pressures than hydraulic systems. As a result, pneumatic components are made out of inexpensive materials. Hydraulic systems operate at high pressures and require more durable and expensive materials in their construction.
Air-operated systems offer a low initial cost but operating costs can be high. Hydraulic systems are more expensive initially but the cost is offset by low operating costs. Hydraulic systems can often be messy since they use oil or other liquids. When a component fails in a hydraulic system, liquid splatters all over the work area. When components in a pneumatic system fail, only air is released.
Consumers can purchase both hydraulic and pneumatic tools. Hydraulic tools can last for more than 15 years while pneumatic tools last for between five and 10 years. Pneumatic tools, however, are much cheaper than hydraulic tools. Hydraulic tools require less maintenance than pneumatic tools.
