How do I Identify Jadite?

Jadite, or jadeite, is a mineral that belongs to the family of jade stones. There are two forms of jade. The first is nephrite, and the second is jadeite. An observation test will enable you to identify this mineral.
  1. Color

    • Jadeite is a distinct bright green or turquoise color. It does not have any speckles, lines, or grains running through it. When you look at jadeite, you will see that the stone is evenly and entirely green.

    Texture

    • Jadeite is a tough material; when you squeeze it, it is hard, but with a smooth texture. If you rub it with a finger you will feel that it has an even, silky surface. Check for these characteristics to identify if the stone you have is jadeite.

    Luster

    • Luster is a measurement of how well a mineral reflects light. Jadeite is described by Kim Howard as having a "slightly greasy luster." This means that the stone reflects light in a way that gives its surface an oily shine. Hold it up to a bright light and move it slightly to reflect the light. If you identify a greasy shine, then your stone could be jadeite.
