Activities to Promote Perceptual & Motor Skills

Perceptual and motor skills are both important skills that, if not routinely practiced, will deteriorate as you age. Your perceptual skills are your ability to distinguish things visually while your motor skills are your ability to control your body's movements. They divide further into gross motor skills (large movements, such as clapping your hands) and fine motor skills (small movements, such as writing cursive). The best way to improve any of these is through activities and games so that they more of an activity and less of a chore.
  1. Perceptual Skills

    • Perceptual skills are what allow you to distinguish between things. They also play a major role in your ability to remember things visually (which is a different skill from your ability to recall things such as facts and figures).

Two good activities to hone both of these skills are spot the difference games and memory games. Spot the difference games are available online and in print in a variety of stores, and they require you to look at the finer details of pictures rather than the picture as a whole. Memory games with pictures force you to use your visual memory, which will ultimately improve it in the long term.

    Gross Motor Skills

    • To practice your gross motor skills, you need to get active. Ride a bike, go for a run, start rock climbing or start essentially any other activity that requires you to balance and move your body. If you have children, or work with children, playing with them is a good way to improve your gross motor skills -- hopscotch, tag, or just generally climbing around a playground will force your body to improve your gross motor skills.

    Fine Motor Skills

    • Fine motor skills are your ability to carry out fine-tuned activities such as sewing a button onto a shirt. Cutting along a line will improve your fine motor skills, as will doing mazes by pencil or sewing and knitting. Try to find an activity that fits in with your daily routine and practice it every day; this will ensure that you get the reinforcement you need and ultimately improve your fine motor skills.
