Proper Handling of Refrigeration Units

The manner in which refrigeration units are handled and transported can greatly affect the life of the unit. A refrigeration unit that has not been handled properly or well-maintained will not last as long as it should.
  1. Before Transporting

    • All glass and shelving should be removed prior to transport to reduce the risk of these items shattering or otherwise getting damaged during transport. To allow time for defrosting, a refrigeration unit should be powered off for a few hours prior to transport.

    Transporting

    • To secure a refrigeration unit to a dolly, straps can be wrapped around the unit. Many freezers and other refrigeration units can weigh several hundred pounds. For this reason, it is recommended that you let professional movers handle refrigeration unit transport and installation.

    After Transport

    • A refrigeration unit should not be supplied with power for several hours after it has been on its back or side. The refrigeration unit's compressor lubrication oil can run out of the crankcase if the unit is placed on its back or side. Time must be allowed for this oil to retreat back into the crankcase before power is supplied to the unit.
