Make a list of the goals of your home organization. List goals like being more hygienic or having an organized look, or easier to perform work in, easier to clean or easier to access frequently used items. Match these goals to your immediate needs, such as company coming, working on a school project or preparing a big dinner for some friends in an hour.
Take inventory of the organization items for each room in your home. With a paper and pencil walk through every room and write down what needs to be organized. Next to each item write down the estimated amount of time it will take to organize to meet your goals outlined in step 1.
Grab some different sized boxes and locate a spare room or closet in your home to place all items that you want to discard or temporarily store. Choose items in the rooms that you don't need right now or will take too long to organize the way you want.
Go to each room and fill the box with the items you have noted for removal in step 3. After you've finished removing items from a specific room, close the box and label it with the name of the room. Continue in this fashion until all the rooms have been cleared of the items you marked for temporary storage.
Walk through each of the rooms again. Arrange items that have been left to meet your organizational goals. Move items not in drawers or closets to drawers or closets according to your organizational goals. Also, move items from tables and shelves to drawers and closets according to your organizational goals.
