How to Learn to Read a Calendar

A calendar shows dates. The most common form of calendar shows an entire year, but daily, weekly and monthly calendars exist, too.

Yearly calendars show dates in correspondence with the 12 months of the year and usually start wit January and end with December. Monthly calendars break down dates by the days in each week. Weekly calendars further break down the days, and daily calendars show times within a day, allowing their user to schedule specific tasks.

Instructions

Examine the parts of a monthly calendar. The month's name is usually at the top or side of the page. The seven days of the week, either spelled out fully or abbreviated, appear in the top row. Rows of numbers follow in sequential order from 1 to 31, depending on how many days are in the month.

Calendars vary in size and style.

Look at the top row of days of the week. The row usually starts with Sunday, or "Sun." for short. Go to the row below the days of the week, and find the number 1. Look directly above that number to find the day of the week on which the first day, or first date, of the month falls. This is the first week within the month.

    • 3

Locate the second row of numbers. It is the row below the row that has the number 1. This is the second week in the particular month. Each number, or date, falls on a specific day of the week. The specific day of a date can be seen by looking directly upward on the page.

    • 4

Find the third and fourth rows on the calendar. These represent the third and fourth weeks in the month. Read each day by matching a number in a row with a day of the week in the same column, as you did previously.

    • 5

Check whether or not a number is in the fifth row. A fifth row is used when the first day of a month starts at the end of a week. If April 1 falls on a Saturday, for example, then the dates at the end of April most likely are in a fifth row, or fifth week.
